The local government of Massemen, a sub-municipality of Wetteren, is launching a call for ideas regarding the future of the old municipal school. The building, currently housing the library, a rehearsal room, and KUNSTacademie premises, is to be better utilized as a community hub.

The old municipal school is located in the heart of Massemen. The local government aims to optimize the use of its buildings and consolidate services, and is therefore looking at the future of the library in Massemen. The goal is to better utilize the building and make it more meaningful for the neighborhood. "This building helps define the face of Massemen. It must remain a place where residents meet," state the local authorities. "We want to hear what ideas are out there first. Only then will we choose a direction."
The administration is open to various ideas but sets three conditions: no residences will be built in the building, the municipality will not sell it (but can make it available long-term, for example, through long leasehold), and the building must remain for the residents. Every proposal must demonstrate how the library will find a place there, with special attention to children and young people.
This is an initial exploratory phase. Submitting ideas does not create any obligations for either party. After January 15, 2027, all ideas will be compiled and reviewed to decide on the next steps.
The municipal council decided on the document with the conditions on October 22, 2026. Interested parties can visit the building on Monday, November 9 or Monday, December 7, 2026, both at 2 PM. Registration is possible via secretariaat@wetteren.be.
