Fifth-grade students from six Maldegem primary schools – GO! De Driesprong, GO! De Kruipuit, VBS De Ark II, VBS De Kleiheuvel, VBS De Parel, and VBS De Papaver – gathered for an educational and relaxing morning. This kick-off day marks the beginning of a new Climate Brigade year, focusing on environmental and climate issues.
In preparation for the event, the schools received an assignment centered on the theme of heritage trees in Maldegem. Each class crafted a tree from recycled materials, which was presented during the kick-off day.
The students also enjoyed an interactive theater performance titled 't Is nog niet te laat (It's Not Too Late Yet), presented by school theater group Gusta. The performance playfully addressed themes of climate, sustainability, and the environment, emphasizing what everyone can do to help the Earth.
The Climate Brigade was founded in 2017 by the local government of Maldegem, the Province of East Flanders, and Maldegem's primary schools. Its mission is to actively reduce CO2 emissions in schools. Each year, fifth-graders are given assignments related to climate change.
