The development of the Groene Velden adds 12 hectares for nature, forest, water, and soft recreation. These achievements are the result of years of collaboration between various partners, including Stad Gent.
This expansion strengthens the green edge of Ghent, helps mitigate heat during warm periods, enhances biodiversity, and creates additional space for water storage, making the environment more resilient to climate change.
The entire green area, now spanning over 600 hectares, is completed with new walking and cycling paths, reception points, and information boards. Visitors can now better enjoy the connection between the Bourgoyen, Groene Velden, the Vinderhoutse Bossen, and the valley of the Oude Kale.
Stad Gent co-invested in this project, alongside Flanders, the Province of East Flanders, and Lievegem. Funding largely came from Flanders (land acquisition and development), supplemented by contributions from the province, the city, and the municipality.
The Vinderhoutse Bossen is the outcome of a long-term collaboration between authorities, farmers, nature organizations, and local residents. Over 113 hectares of the planned forest expansion have already been realized.
The renewed green area will be officially opened on October 10, 2026, and is an attractive destination for walkers, cyclists, and nature enthusiasts.
