Starting from late 2026, traffic circulation in and around the Bijlokewijk neighborhood in Ghent will undergo several changes. These adjustments are intended to reduce traffic pressure, discourage cut-through traffic, and improve conditions for cyclists on Coupure Links.
Key modifications include reversing the direction of traffic on Coupure Links between Rozemarijnstraat and Hospitaalstraat, directing cars southward. Vehicles coming from Papegaaistraat will no longer be permitted to turn left onto Coupure Links towards Hospitaalstraat. A section of Hospitaalstraat will become one-way. The part of Bijlokevest between Bernard Spaelaan and Roderoestraat will be reopened to motorized traffic in both directions.
The city is responding to concerns about high traffic volume and the vulnerable situation of cyclists. Following consultations with residents and local businesses, including an information session on March 16, 2026, the plans have been adjusted. Consequently, Roderoestraat will remain a quiet residential street, no traffic filter will be installed in Bijlokestraat, and the neighborhood will remain accessible via multiple routes.
The implementation of the new circulation is scheduled after the completion of works on the R40 Groot-Brittanniëlaan, also planned for late 2026. Residents will receive timely additional information. Post-implementation, the Mobility Company will monitor traffic flows in the area to assess the impact of the new measures.
Since March 2026, discussions have been held with the Bijlokesite and the De Refuge care center, and various scenarios have been explored focusing on traffic safety, livability, and accessibility for residents, emergency services, waste collection, and suppliers. Concerns regarding Roderoestraat, the safety of the Coupure Links cycle street, and Bijlokestraat have been incorporated into the final proposal, which is set for decision by the college of Mayor and Aldermen in September 2026.
