The Limburg Transport Council decided on September 21, 2026, to add 48 extra Blue-bike shared bicycles and to greatly improve user convenience with a "back-to-many" system. This brings the total number of shared bikes in the transport region to 260, spread across 40 locations in Limburg. From now on, bikes can be left at any Limburg Blue-bike station, regardless of the starting point.
Extra attention is given to student cycling. The transport region expects these measures to significantly increase the use of shared bikes. Laura Olaerts, political chair of the transport council and Limburg's Deputy for Mobility, emphasizes that shared mobility is an important addition to the classic transport offering. She is pleased with the expansion and the improved user-friendliness of the system, stating that the Blue-Bikes will be deployed more strategically at locations with the highest demand, with particular focus on students who can thus travel to their campus more easily and sustainably.
Under the contract with Blue Bike, the transport region now has 260 operational shared bikes at 40 locations in the province. Since the start in July 2024, bike usage has been monitored, leading to location adjustments in consultation with municipalities to move bikes from less-used spots to areas with higher demand. The additional shared bikes are now being focused on locations with the highest potential, particularly for higher education students.
New locations for the shared bikes include the Hoppinpunt campus Diepenbeek (8 bikes), PXL campus 11de linie (6 bikes), UCLL campus Oude Luikerbaan (6 bikes), and Park H/Provinciehuis (10 bikes). The "back-to-many" system, which Blue-bike has already launched elsewhere in Flanders, is now also being implemented in Limburg. This means rides can be ended at any other Blue-bike location within the zone without an extra charge, offering more flexibility.
The app will automatically show other locations within the zone where rides can be ended at no extra cost. The various locations are thus connected in a network, significantly improving user convenience. Blue Bike will continue to monitor locations and move bikes to ensure continuous availability. Furthermore, Limburg municipalities can also provide additional bikes on their own initiative within the framework contract.
