During the Pedestrian Month in October, the City of Ghent is highlighting several ‘unexpected’ walks, including the Groene Banaan. This adventurous route follows a raised railway embankment between Serafijnstraat and Veenakkerstraat, shaped like a banana from above. Walks along the white houses on Malem island and a route by the Karel Sabbe-berg are also featured. Along the way, walkers can scan QR codes to create digital postcards.
Additionally, the Ghent police will conduct extra checks in the city's pedestrian streets throughout October. Between 11 AM and 6 PM, the busiest shopping, walking, and hospitality streets are exclusively for pedestrians. Cyclists and scooter users must dismount, with only wheelchair or mobility scooter users permitted to proceed at walking pace. This measure aims to ensure space and safety for pedestrians.
The City is also urging Ghent residents to complete the Pedestrian Barometer, an initiative mapping pedestrian experiences across Belgium to identify needs and areas for improvement. Submissions are open until October 31st via www.voetgangersbarometer.be.
