Several dilapidated sheds on a 1.27-hectare site at the corner of Neststraat and Autoweg-Zuid in Sint-Denijs-Westrem will be torn down. Demolition work begins this week. Eventually, a new section of forest will be created, partly consisting of birth trees. In the coming years, forest will also be planted on the other side of Syntra, between Autoweg-Zuid and Duddegemstraat. Together, these areas will form a buffer forest along the highway.
The Rosdambeekvallei is already a valuable nature reserve home to rare plants such as adderwort and blue sedge, as well as animals like the marsh warbler, eel, and beaver. By planting new forest and connecting existing natural areas, these species will have more opportunities to establish and develop in the region.
Through this demolition, the City of Ghent is creating more space for nature in the Rosdambeekvallei. The new forest will enhance ecological coherence and offer additional opportunities for various plant and animal species, translating the Ghent species plan into tangible results.
The project is part of the RUP Groen Rosdambeekvallei. With this zoning plan, the City of Ghent aims to further restore the stream valley, connect existing woodlands, and plant approximately 10.5 hectares of new forest, ultimately expanding the green area of the Rosdambeekvallei to 25 hectares.
