Meylandt Castle in Heusden-Zolder received an unusual group on Friday, October 2: 350 sheep and their shepherds.

The sheep, en route from the Achelse Kluis to Brussels during the Herderstocht 2026 (Shepherd's March 2026), stayed overnight at the castle. Shepherds Johan and Toon Schouteden travelled through Flanders for sixteen days with their flock to highlight the shepherding profession and emphasize the important role sheep still play today in nature management, biodiversity, and landscape preservation.
On October 2, the flock entered Heusden-Zolder from Houthalen-Helchteren. After a stop at the Galgenberg, they proceeded towards Meylandt, where a notable amount of bleating was heard for one night. The following morning, the flock stretched their legs again and headed towards Lummen.
The march concluded on October 13 in the Ter Kamerenbos in Brussels. However, one thing is certain: 350 sheep spending the night at Meylandt Castle is not something seen every day.
