“"Through the Heritage Snippets, we want to showcase the diversity of East Flanders' heritage, in all municipalities of our province. With this first title for Brakel, another fascinating aspect of our heritage story is added to a rich library, available for the interested reader and cultural tourist. I am convinced that many more titles will follow from all corners of our province."

On Sunday, October 18, the Province of East Flanders presented its latest Heritage Snippet in Brakel, titled 'About welcome and pollard trees, coppice hedges and pollarding, forest edges and chapels. The Hayesbos and the Verrebeekvallei'. This free publication invites readers to discover a specially protected landscape in the Flemish Ardennes.
The publication illustrates how nature, history, and human activities have shaped the landscape over centuries. It is the first Heritage Snippet to focus specifically on a heritage story from Brakel.
Author Annelies Schepens, a landscape heritage expert at the Regional Landscape Flemish Ardennes to Dender (RLVAD), guides the reader through the booklet, teaching them to read the landscape. She explains the historical layers, the significance of trees and chapels, and the function of small landscape elements, emphasizing that a landscape is more than just nature; it is a witness to our past.
The Heritage Snippet series, launched in 2015, aims to make the rich heritage of East Flanders accessible. This 82nd installment, created in collaboration with RLVAD, highlights that landscapes also bear the traces of human activity.
The 16-page brochure is available free of charge at the library and town hall of Brakel, and at the Streekhuis in Ronse. The publication can also be downloaded digitally via oost-vlaanderen.be/erfgoedsprokkels.
