The local authority of Maldegem officially kicked off the extensive renovation of the De Zandakkers youth center in Adegem on Thursday evening. This investment aims to make the building more sustainable, energy-efficient, and comfortable for users and local residents.

The youth center, a long-standing hub for local associations like IBO De Zandloper and KLJ Adegem, will undergo a comprehensive energy renovation. The roof and facades will be insulated, exterior joinery completely replaced, and new energy-efficient technologies installed. These measures are expected to significantly reduce energy consumption and costs while enhancing user comfort.
Work is scheduled to commence in 2027 and is anticipated to conclude in 2028. This renovation is part of Maldegem's broader climate objectives to enhance the sustainability of its municipal assets. By focusing on energy saving, renewable energy, and greening initiatives, the administration contributes to the goals of the Covenant of Mayors 2030 and the Local Energy and Climate Pact (LEKP).
The total project value amounts to €954,197.09. Maldegem will receive a subsidy of €317,306.83 from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and a contribution of €150,720.75 from the Province of East Flanders. The local authority itself is investing €486,169.51 in this project.
