The city of Aalst has completed the renovation of Welvaartstraat, a section of the Oude Gentbaan, and Sint-Anna Parking. The project included the installation of a separated sewer system, renewal of the road surface, and redesign of the park and bus stop.

In Aalst, the extensive works on Welvaartstraat, a part of the Oude Gentbaan, and Sint-Anna Parking have been completed. Contractor Viabuild from Puurs-Sint-Amands began in early November 2024 by breaking up the existing road surfaces and old sewer systems. A separated sewer system was installed, consisting of two pipes: one for wastewater and one for rainwater. This new system is designed to better manage large volumes of water during heavy rainfall, thus preventing floods. Following the sewer installation, the road surface was renewed.
The sidewalks were laid with concrete pavers, and parking spaces with grass pavers. Several green zones were established, including at the road alignment shifts. A new ditch was created in the park. The road structure is designed to allow rainwater to infiltrate the soil as much as possible, which replenishes groundwater and reduces the risk of flooding.
The renovated park features benches, play elements, and multifunctional seating elements placed between existing and new trees. These elements, made of fiber-reinforced concrete, offer space for neighbors to chat, for workouts, or stretching after a run. Children can expend their energy and bring their wildest fantasies to life. The bus stop was also renewed and equipped with bicycle racks.
The design plans were presented at resident meetings on Thursday, March 31, 2022, and Wednesday, September 11, 2024, where resident feedback was incorporated. Preparatory utility works took place from March 2023 to July 2023. After approval by the college of mayor and aldermen, the tender was issued, and the works were awarded to contractor Viabuild.
The phasing of the renovation included Sint-Anna Parking, the intersection of Welvaartstraat x Ledebaan (Phase 1), the section of Welvaartstraat from Ledebaan to Asserendries (Phase 2a), the intersection of Welvaartstraat x Asserendries (Phase 2b), the section of Welvaartstraat from Asserendries to Spaarzaamheidstraat (Phase 3), the part between Spaarzaamheidstraat and the intersection of Oude Gentbaan x Gentsesteenweg (N9) x Welvaartstraat (Phases 4 and 5), and finally Oude Gentbaan, Roklijf, and the park (Phase 6). The works were completed in early October.
