The first of two 'babbelbanken' (chat benches), an initiative by VTI Aalst students, is now located in the garden of Huis Hoop, the support center for cancer patients at AZORG campus Moorselbaan in Aalst. The second bench will be placed at the entrance of AZORG campus Merestraat.
These benches are designed to invite patients, their loved ones, visitors, and staff to pause, meet each other, and engage in conversation. The idea is that valuable discussions arise naturally simply by sitting next to someone.
For individuals facing cancer, such a space can hold special significance. A cancer diagnosis brings not only medical challenges but also numerous emotions, uncertainties, and questions. A spontaneous conversation, a listening ear, or a moment of shared experience can be profoundly meaningful.
The chat benches also offer healthcare providers an opportunity to conduct conversations in a different, more relaxed setting. Stepping away from the consultation room, sitting together outdoors, and making time for what concerns an individual. Because good care involves not only treatment but also listening, closeness, and human connection.

"At Huis Hoop, we know how valuable a simple conversation can be. Those confronted with cancer don't always need answers, but sometimes primarily someone who listens. This chat bench offers a warm, accessible place to catch your breath, share experiences, or simply be together. The fact that young people have worked on this initiative with such care and commitment makes it extra special."

"Cancer affects much more than just your health. Emotionally and socially, the impact can be enormous, both for people with cancer and their loved ones. That's why Kom op tegen Kanker believes it's so important to have space for meeting, a listening ear, and open conversation. These chat benches make that connection very tangible. The fact that young people are taking the initiative themselves makes it even more valuable. They show that everyone can contribute to a warmer society where no one stands alone."
