Throughout the week, cameras are being deployed around the intersection of cycle highway F74 and Bemvaartstraat. These cameras will be used to observe traffic at the intersection through camera measurements and subsequently conduct a traffic safety analysis. The investigation into traffic safety at this intersection is commissioned by the province, following an insistence from the municipality.
Since May 2025, cyclists on cycle highway F74 have priority over cars at intersections. Many users have expressed their concerns about this rule, particularly regarding the intersection with Bemvaartstraat, questioning whether the traffic situation there is sufficiently safe.
The F74 in Pelt is the busiest cycle highway in all of Limburg. However, the Bemvaartstraat is also a busy east-west connection in the municipality. Since the redesign of the intersection of these two connections, several collisions involving cyclists have occurred.
“"The municipality takes this seriously and we have conveyed our concerns to the Province of Limburg, which is the administrator of the cycle highways in Limburg. Now, with the help of cameras, the necessary observations regarding the traffic situation at the intersection are being carried out."
Liesbeth Fransen, alderman for cycling policy, emphasizes that the municipality takes the situation seriously and has conveyed its concerns to the Province of Limburg, which is responsible for the cycle highways in the province.
