Archaeological research in Koepoortstraat, a project impacting the accessibility of Halen's centre, is nearing completion. The first phase, near the intersection with the N2/Staatsbaan, was finished this week. Archaeologists are now continuing their work in the area next to the church.
Currently, Koepoortstraat is not accessible via the Market square from the church side. However, access via the N2/Staatsbaan remains open, as does access to the Begijnhofplein. The archaeological investigation is expected to last until the end of October.
Starting November 4th, the contractor will commence sewer works in Koepoortstraat. These works will begin at the intersection with the N2/Staatsbaan and will gradually move towards the Market square.
On the Market square itself, work is also progressing. A large part of the existing paving has been broken up and is being provided with a new foundation. In the area in front of the town hall, a significant portion of the new paving has already been laid, with further work scheduled for next week.
The town hall remains accessible via Marktstraat, at the rear of the building. From there, visitors can walk to the main entrance via the alley next to the town hall. This alley is exclusively for pedestrians. Access via Doelstraat is currently not possible.
The city of Halen thanks residents, traders, and visitors for their patience and understanding during these works, which contribute to a more beautiful, safer, and pleasant city centre.
