The youth movement Groene Gaaien in Genk encourages children to experience nature and find energy in it, focusing on play and mutual learning.

The youth movement Groene Gaaien, founded with the mission to let children and families re-experience how enjoyable and valuable nature is, offers a unique approach to youth work. The founder shares her passion: "For me, nature has always been a place to find peace and new energy."
Groene Gaaien caters to children aged 7 to 12 years old. Unlike traditional youth movements, this one does not have a fixed annual progression with age-specific groups. Different ages stay together, fostering an environment where everyone can learn from each other.
The importance of nature experience for children is emphasized: "Children spend too much time indoors. In nature, they get space to play freely, build self-confidence, and respect their environment." The founder sees the positive impact, partly thanks to her own sons who grew up with nature and are now nature monitors themselves.
New members are always welcome at Groene Gaaien. Although the new season started in September, joining is still possible. No expertise or experience is required; only curiosity about nature and a desire to play outside are sufficient.
To mark the Day of the Youth Movement, on October 23rd early in the morning, members of Genk youth movements will wear their outfits and be treated to breakfast by the Genk Youth Council at the Stadsplein in Genk-Centrum.
The Groene Gaaien activities take place during school weeks on Wednesdays at the Heempark, Hoogzij 7.
