Roeselare City has unveiled Lander Avijn's striking installation 'In Beeld' on De Munt. The three reflective sculptures are intended to become a landmark, bringing together the environment, visitors, and daily city life in a constantly changing image.
This installation is an important step in the broader upgrade of De Munt and its connection with the surrounding shopping streets. The Citroenstraat previously received colorful landscaping, and a large digital screen will soon be installed. Additional signage from Noordstraat and Henri Horriestraat is also being investigated.
These interventions are part of the project 'Sustainable accessibility of the core', funded by VLAIO subsidies. The goal is to connect De Munt more strongly with the shopping streets and develop the square into an attractive shopping and experience destination.
Lander Avijn drew inspiration from Roeselare as a city in motion, shaped by its residents, workers, and visitors. The reflective sculptures capture light, architecture, and passers-by, causing the artwork to constantly change and making each visitor part of the work. It symbolizes 'Together in the city', where different perspectives form the whole.
Avijn, who lives and works in Gullegem and has been active as an artist since 2015, chose a strategic location for 'In Beeld'. The sculptures serve as a visual focal point for visitors walking from Noordstraat and support pedestrian routes without blocking passages.
The artwork changes with the time of day, reflecting light during the day and shop facades in the evening. A jury of Roeselare traders and experts in art and experience selected Avijn's proposal for its artistic quality and contribution to the experience of De Munt.
With this investment, Roeselare City aims to make the city center more attractive and recognizable, with art, design, and signage better connecting the square to the surrounding shopping streets.
