The idea for the picking garden originated with Inge, an avid gardener seeking a space for raspberries and outdoor activities with others. In December 2021, she found an unused patch of green in Vlakveld. Together with about five neighbours, they began working on it. The volunteers maintain the garden collectively and share in the harvest. Passing walkers are welcome to pick raspberries from the outer edges of the garden.
The garden's approach prioritizes simplicity, allowing plants like corn salad that sprout naturally to thrive. Herbs such as thyme, marjoram, and sage are also planned. "It doesn't always have to be complicated. We love plants that take care of themselves," says Inge. While some plants require more attention, they offer significant rewards, like the raspberry bushes. "It's so rewarding to pick those raspberries. You've nurtured them yourself, and then you can just eat them. That feels really good."
Inge highlights that the garden's value extends beyond the harvest. Being outdoors provides her with peace and energy. "When I work in the garden, I'm completely focused on something else. It brings me calm, but also a lot of energy. And then being able to harvest your own vegetables and fruits provides extra satisfaction. It's simply beneficial. I can truly recommend it to everyone." She suggests that one doesn't need extensive time, a large garden, or a green thumb to start; even with limited time, one can begin small, for instance, by laying down cardboard and a thick layer of leaves in autumn to plant potatoes.
For those interested in starting their own garden, Natuurpunt offers plants through their plant sale. Orders of 10 euros or more receive a free birdhouse.
