The 'Week van het Bos' (Forest Week) officially kicked off on Sunday, October 4th, in Nationaal Park Bosland, highlighting the hidden world of the forest floor.
The Agency for Nature and Forest has dedicated this year's 'Week van het Bos' campaign to the fascinating world hidden beneath our feet. During the opening day in Pelt, within Nationaal Park Bosland, hundreds of families discovered the diversity of life in the forest soil. Fungi, bacteria, soil creatures, and plant roots form an essential ecosystem for a healthy forest.
The campaign aims to playfully raise awareness among children and families about the importance of the forest floor. Schools can also utilize educational materials for this theme. The official opening took place in Heesakkerheide in Pelt.

"The campaign around soil life immediately came to life during the opening day. Visitors could explore with forest rangers and learn more about the importance of a healthy forest floor. Children could experience firsthand how much life is hidden under leaves and in the ground."
In addition to educational activities, the day also offered opportunities for nature experiences, including tree climbing, a barefoot path, and building with bamboo. Creative workshops, such as making seed balls and customizing bicycles, were also available. Musical entertainment and encounters with cheerful characters provided a varied afternoon.

"A National Park is not only there to protect nature but also to let people discover and experience that nature. By introducing children to it in a playful way, we also give them more appreciation for nature."
The Week van het Bos, an initiative by the Agency for Nature and Forest in collaboration with BOS+, takes place throughout Flanders with activities for schools, families, and nature enthusiasts. The opening day in Nationaal Park Bosland was a collaboration between the park, the Agency for Nature and Forest, and the municipality of Pelt, with the support of numerous partners and volunteers.
Those who wish to continue exploring after the opening day can visit Nationaal Park Bosland year-round, as there is always more to discover in the forest than meets the eye.
