The mayor of Antwerp has sealed and closed a shop on De Bosschaertstraat in Kiel from November 4 to December 3, 2026, after repeated inspections revealed hundreds of expired products and severe contamination.

Despite previous inspections and a formal warning, supervisors again found hundreds of products past their expiration date, some dating back to August 2023. Hygiene standards were also severely lacking, with mouse droppings found in refrigerators and products, shelves, and ventilation grilles covered in dust and dirt. The loose candy display contained debris and a sticky substance, and a dish with loose pest poison was found in a corner.
The temperature displays of both freezers were not working, preventing verification of the required storage temperatures. Furthermore, several products lacked price indications, and the responsible person could not present the mandatory administrative documents.
The operator had previously been formally warned about poor hygiene and offering expired products. However, the inspection team again identified serious shortcomings, and the operator subsequently failed to sufficiently demonstrate that the problems had been structurally addressed.
The shop will remain closed until at least December 3. Reopening is only possible after a favorable reinspection, where the operator must prove all deficiencies have been rectified. During the closure period, the premises must be thoroughly cleaned by a specialized company, pest control must be implemented with a prevention plan, and all expired products must be removed.
