A collaborative project is launching in the Moretuswijk to combat litter and illegal dumping. The Local Authority of Heist-op-den-Berg, Woonschakel Berg & Nete, and IOK Afvalbeheer are working together, supported financially by Mooimakers. The initiative focuses on collecting PMD (recyclables) and paper and cardboard, with residents playing a crucial role in improving waste management and increasing community involvement.
Following previous issues with litter, illegal dumping, incorrect sorting, and vandalism at waste containers, three new waste collection points were opened on October 7. These replace the ten previously accessible open collection sites. The new approach involves fixed collection moments, emphasizing correct sorting, cleaner collection points, and a reduction in illegal dumping.
Engaged volunteers from the neighborhood will help manage the waste zones at pre-arranged times. Residents can bring their PMD and paper and cardboard there and can consult the volunteers for questions about correct sorting. This initiative turns waste collection into a shared commitment for a tidy neighborhood.
This project extends beyond mere waste collection, encompassing an integrated approach with participation, communication, and enforcement. Residents are actively involved with clear sorting rules and refreshed sites, aiming to boost neighborhood engagement and a sense of responsibility. The focus is on 'soft enforcement,' where residents are addressed and guided towards correct sorting behavior. For persistent illegal dumping, Woonschakel Berg & Nete and the neighborhood police will implement targeted enforcement.
The goal is for the local authority, IOK Afvalbeheer, and Woonschakel Berg & Nete, together with the residents, to build a Moretuswijk that is pleasant to live in and where everyone contributes to caring for the neighborhood.
