The mayor of Antwerp has decided to temporarily close three convenience stores in Deurne and Borgerhout due to serious breaches of public health, safety, and order.

Controls revealed large quantities of illegal products, including over 4,000 units of nicotine pouches and snus, and more than 900 prohibited disposable vapes. Additionally, over 600 pieces of counterfeit toys that did not meet European safety standards were found.
Furthermore, severe deficiencies in hygiene and fire safety were noted. One location had contaminated cat litter boxes, another lacked fire safety measures and had a strong chemical odor. These findings led to the closure of the businesses to prevent further risks.
Two stores will be closed for two months, from November 3, 2026, to January 2, 2027. The third store faces a three-month closure, until February 3, 2027.
Before reopening, operators must demonstrate that the identified shortcomings have been rectified, including thorough cleaning and removal of expired products. The city will conduct a follow-up inspection.
