The neighbourhood park at Moorkensplein in Borgerhout will be significantly expanded, with the addition of a covered neighbourhood bicycle shed, following a decision by Antwerp City.

Antwerp City, in consultation with the district of Borgerhout, has decided to relocate the previously planned new construction at Moorkensplein. This will allow the space originally intended for the building and an inner courtyard to be integrated into the new neighbourhood park. This park will extend from Langstraat to Mellaertsstraat.
To facilitate this expansion, the city is adjusting the existing design brief. The project area will be enlarged to accommodate the additional space. A new, cohesive design will be developed for the entire area, encompassing both the park and the supplementary facilities. A covered neighbourhood bicycle shed will also be included in the brief.
With these adjustments, the city aims to create more public space in the heart of Borgerhout, a densely built-up district with a high demand for quality open space.
“

"I am pleased that with this new design, we can make a long-awaited fresh start with this beautiful project for Borgerhout! This design will build on the guiding principles developed together with the neighbourhood. The focus will remain on more greenery, space for meeting, play and relaxation, climate adaptation, and a qualitative connection with Moorkensplein."

Ken Casier · Alderman for public domain and district affairs

"The fact that the Moorkensplein neighbourhood park is getting bigger is the direct result of a clear and explicit request from the district of Borgerhout. As the district board, we have insisted from the beginning on relocating the planned new construction, with one clear goal: a fully-fledged Reuzenpark. We have consistently put this ambition on the table and are therefore very pleased that we are finally taking concrete steps. In a densely built-up district like Borgerhout, extra green and public space is not a luxury, but a necessity. With the Reuzenpark, we are giving the neighbourhood the breathing room it deserves and investing in a greener, more liveable, and more pleasant Borgerhout for everyone."

Mariam El Osri · District Mayor of Borgerhout
