The city of Geel is planting new trees across its territory, including at the expansion of the cemeteries in Bel, Oosterlo, and Punt. Additionally, in collaboration with the Regionaal Landschap Kleine en Grote Nete, the city is planting another 115 extra trees. These will be primarily located between the Prinsenpark in Retie and the Breeven nature reserve. This initiative strengthens green corridors, facilitating easier movement for birds, insects, and other animals between the two nature areas.
Trees improve air quality, provide cooling on hot days, and help retain water longer. The city is receiving subsidies for this project through the Vlaamse Landmaatschappij.
The tree planting is scheduled for the autumn. The works will not cause any traffic disruptions.
