In Elsum, an ambitious project began on October 19 to renovate nine streets, aiming to improve infrastructure and create a greener streetscape.

The project involves the renovation of nine streets: Azaleastraat, Drijhoek, Eikenstraat, Dr.-Peetersstraat, Elsum, Meidoornstraat, Meuldersplein, Kabienstraat, and Tulpenstraat. Various contractors will initially adapt and renew cables and pipes. During these utility works, streets, homes, and businesses will remain accessible, and disruption will be limited.
Once the preparatory works in a street are completed, Aquafin will begin installing a separate sewerage system. This means different works will be underway simultaneously in various locations. When Aquafin starts the road and sewerage works, that specific street will be closed off.
Aquafin is implementing a separate sewerage system to manage wastewater and rainwater independently. Wastewater will be directed to a treatment plant, while rainwater will flow to a nearby watercourse. This approach promotes rainwater infiltration into the ground, helping to replenish groundwater levels. Additionally, Aquafin will uncover the Roosbroekenloop in a section of the Eikenstraat and construct a retention basin behind the Drijhoek. These measures further enhance groundwater infiltration and reduce the risk of flooding.
Following the installation of the sewerage system, each street will receive a new design tailored to its specific use. Where possible, the city will reduce hardscaping and increase greenery. Significant attention will also be paid to the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. For instance, the Kabienstraat will become a garden street, and the area around the Sint-Dimpnakapel in Elsum will be made safer and clearer.
