The municipality of Bonheiden has introduced a new procedure where Population Service employees can now take applicant passport photos themselves at the counter.

This new method, known as 'live enrollment', allows the passport photo to be immediately linked to the application for an identity card, residence card, or Kids-ID (for ages 3 and up). This enhances security and reduces the chance of identity fraud.
By taking the photo directly during the application process, employees can link biometric data, such as fingerprints when required, to the same person. This makes it more difficult to use manipulated photos or photos of someone else.
The municipality also aims to combat 'lookalike fraud', where someone tries to impersonate a person who strongly resembles them. The procedure strengthens the reliability of the identification process.
Furthermore, discussions about the age or validity of passport photos will disappear, as the photos are now taken on-site.
