Bird flu of the H5N1 type has been detected in Balen at a hobbyist. The FASFC has consequently established protection and surveillance zones to prevent further spread of the virus.

An infection with the severe bird flu variant H5N1 has been confirmed at a poultry hobbyist in Balen. To prevent further spread of the virus, the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) has demarcated a protection zone and a surveillance zone.
Dessel lies within the 10-kilometer surveillance zone around the infection hotspot. Therefore, additional measures temporarily apply to keepers of poultry and other birds.
Poultry and hobby poultry must be kept indoors or shielded in such a way that they cannot come into contact with wild birds. This obligation does not apply to ratites.
In addition, there are rules for feeding and watering birds, moving birds and hatching eggs, and organizing gatherings with birds.
A complete overview of all measures can be found on the website of the FASFC.
