On Wednesday, October 28, the Province of West Flanders and Poperinge will present the plans for a new green zone in Roesbrugge, located between the Sint-Martinuskerk and the IJzer river.

The green zone, spanning 5.44 hectares, is intended as a green meeting place with space for nature, water management, and recreation. The project also aims to mitigate waterlogging and create a green connection between the village and the IJzer.
The land was purchased in 2025 by the Province of West Flanders. A design plan illustrates the potential appearance of the green zone. This initiative is part of the IJzer and Handzame Valley area program, where 31 partners are working to enhance nature and protect open spaces.
The estimated cost for the development is 240,000 euros. The cross-border project Clim@YserAa is funding 60 percent of this amount, with the goal of strengthening nature and biodiversity in the IJzer Valley.
The province intends to apply for the environmental permit in the autumn of 2026. If all proceeds as planned, construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027. The works are preferably carried out in dry weather conditions.
