At the end of 2025, Oostende City Council implemented a temporary alcohol ban in the Station area, the vicinity of Marie Joséplein, Alfons Pieterslaan, Adolf Buylstraat, and Kapellestraat. This ban expired on September 16, 2026. Following an initial positive evaluation by residents, but with persistent nuisance and more reports around De Grote Post and Lijnbaanstraat, a decision has been made to extend the ban by six months and expand its scope.
The evaluation, based on findings from the Local Police, surveys among residents and traders, and analysis of reports to O-punt, indicates that 75% of respondents are satisfied and 59% perceive the neighborhood as safer. Despite this positive feedback, alcohol-related nuisance continues, with the average number of findings per month in 2026 being comparable to last year. The alcohol ban is considered an important instrument for public order and tranquility.
The scope of application will be adjusted to areas with the most alcohol-related problems. The ban is extended in the existing zones and broadened to include publicly accessible passages in the Alfons Pieterslaan, near the Aldi supermarket and the Permekegalerij. The area around De Grote Post and Lijnbaanstraat will also now be subject to the ban, which will henceforth apply to minors as well.
Mayor John Crombez emphasizes the responsibility to intervene when nuisance increases to maintain peace and safety. He notes that a large majority of residents view the ban positively, but that nuisance persists. The extension and targeted expansion will be closely monitored.
The municipal administrative sanction (GAS) fine for alcohol consumption in the prohibited zones has been adjusted to the new Penal Code. For adults, the fine can now amount to a maximum of 500 euros, while for minors it is a maximum of 175 euros.
