During the Week of the Sustainable Municipality, residents were invited to reflect on their dreams for a sustainable Kortrijk in 2030. Ideas for making the city greener, warmer, more social, and more connected will form the central theme of the closing evening.
A highlight of the event is the visit of Herr Seele, the ambassador for this edition. The renowned artist is touring various Flemish cities and municipalities with his exhibition ‘Cowboy Henk gaat duurzaam’. The exhibition features six paintings that offer a colorful and unique interpretation of residents' sustainable dreams. In Kortrijk, Herr Seele will engage in conversations with residents about their visions for the city's future, and he will incorporate this inspiration live into a new drawing to be presented at the end of the evening. Additionally, young word artists from the Letterzetter Collectief will provide an artistic interpretation of sustainability and dreams.
Sustainability encompasses not only climate or energy but also people and creating a city where everyone feels at home and has opportunities. Maxim Veys, alderman for Global Policy, emphasizes that Herr Seele's creative approach will make residents' dreams visible and tangible. He also highlights the 'sustainability champions' who make a difference daily, demonstrating that a sustainable Kortrijk grows from engagement, collaboration, and connection.
Prior to the public event, young people (ages 10-14) will have the opportunity to participate in an exclusive cartoon drawing workshop led by Herr Seele, where they will learn the tricks of the trade and engage in creative work.
The evening serves as an inspiring conclusion to the campaign week, centered on collaboration. Under the motto of SDG 17, "Partnership for the Goals," residents, volunteers, organizations, and educational institutions are celebrated for their contributions to a strong and sustainable society. This year's sustainability champions being honored are: Bernard Decock from Grandparents for the Climate, Howest Kortrijk with the WoW Chefchaouen project focusing on sustainable tourism, and the volunteers of De Deelfabriek.
