Following the festive opening of the first section of the Royal Galleries in July, the City of Ostend has received reports regarding the cleanliness and proper use of this heritage site. To protect the vulnerable monumental elements, such as the white columns, newly painted benches, and thousands of new tiles, new regulations are being implemented.
Wheeled transport such as bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and roller skates are no longer permitted in the galleries, which are reserved for pedestrians. This measure aims to protect the delicate floor. It is also forbidden to park bicycles within the galleries; designated parking areas are available at Koninginnelaan, on the seafront promenade, and in the vicinity. This regulation will be presented to the Municipal Council on Monday, September 28, 2026, for approval.
To combat vandalism, illegal dumping, and public urination, the city is exploring the possibility of installing cameras to fine offenders. Community wardens already conduct regular patrols to ensure cleanliness.
The lighting in the galleries is being updated. The old fluorescent tubes will be replaced with new LED lamps for ambient lighting. New lighting will be installed on the exterior of the galleries, directed towards the seafront promenade, which will activate at midnight (24:00), while the ambient lighting will switch off. The ground lighting that illuminates the galleries from the promenade was shielded during the works for protection and will remain in place for the time being; Fluvius plans to replace these lights with a different type of lamp.
To prevent pigeon droppings on the beams and columns, a trial setup with wires will soon be tested. Any issues observed can be reported to the Local Police by calling 101.
The restoration of the Royal Galleries, which began in September 2025, marks the first step in the revival of this iconic location. The City of Ostend, PMV, Restotel, and the Flemish Government are collaborating on the restoration of this heritage site.
