The cities of Menen and Halluin (France) are joining forces to revive the former Kommiezenroute with the 'Kommiezenroute 2.0 - Route des Gabelous' project.

The original Kommiezenroute, which was scrapped by Westtoer in 2022, is getting a second life thanks to a collaboration between the cities of Menen and Halluin, along with partners from the border municipalities. The renewed project has a distinct cross-border ambition.
With the 'Kommiezenroute 2.0 - Route des Gabelous', the partners aim to bring the shared heritage on both sides of the border back to life. Smuggling stories, cross-border labor, the industrial past, and the significance of the Leie river form the common thread of a narrative that has shaped the character of this region for generations.
The new Interreg project aims not only to preserve this past but also to make it an engaging experience. A renewed cycling route and joint initiatives are intended to invite residents and visitors to discover the border region from a different perspective.
During a press event on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at 1:30 PM in the Trouwzaal of the Town Hall of Halluin (rue Marthe Nollet 24, 59250 Halluin, France), the cities of Menen and Halluin will officially present this cross-border project to the press. The project's ambitions and the future of the Kommiezenroute will be explained.
