The municipality of Kuurne has decided to permanently maintain one-way traffic in Bavikhoofsestraat following a successful trial period.

The one-way traffic, originally introduced as a pilot project on May 5, 2025, due to sewer and road works in Hulstsestraat, will now become permanent. The measure was taken to manage traffic pressure during the works and improve the traffic situation in Bavikhoofsestraat, which had long experienced traffic jams and unsafe conditions for cyclists.
After the completion of the works, the trial project continued for further evaluation. Traffic counts, surveys of residents, visitors, and traders, and cyclist safety were decisive. A survey in September 2025 among 865 respondents showed that 75% of residents favor the one-way traffic and find the situation safer. 64% of visitors also have a positive view of the measure.
Traffic counts indicate that motorized traffic in Bavikhoofsestraat is approximately 25% lower than during the closure of Hulstsestraat. In Hulstsestraat, traffic increased by about 40% in the same comparison, while it decreased in Abelenstraat compared to the roadworks period. The police assess the measure positively due to fewer conflict situations at Kruiske and smoother passage for cyclists. The fire department experiences no hindrance.
Other alternatives, such as one-way traffic in Abelenstraat or Hulstsestraat, or a traffic loop through the three streets, proved less suitable. Residents of Abelenstraat wished to maintain two-way traffic, and one-way traffic in Hulstsestraat would affect the accessibility of the Seizoenwijk and bus connections. A reversed direction in Bavikhoofsestraat would not resolve waiting times at ’t Kruiske.
The municipality plans further improvements, including adapted infrastructure at the beginning of Bavikhoofsestraat to better separate cyclists and limit vehicle speed. Adjustments are also planned near Steenovenstraat with clearer signage and better separation between cyclists and cars. Further improvements will be made at the intersection with Pouckeweg and the pedestrian crossing in Abelenstraat.
