With the start of the new academic year, student activities and registrations with Kortrijk's student clubs are also commencing. To welcome new students in a safe and respectful manner, the clubs have reconfirmed their commitment to a positive student life. This is achieved through the signing of a baptism charter and participation in workshops on safety, responsibility, and respectful association life.
The clubs are committed to respecting the physical and mental integrity of all students. The symbolic signing of the baptism charter took place on Wednesday, September 23rd, in the presence of Alderwoman for Education Hannelore Vanhoenacker, representatives from Stad Kortrijk, the four higher education institutions (Howest, Vives, UGent Campus Kortrijk, and KU Leuven Kulak), and the student clubs themselves. This annual tradition highlights the collaboration between the city, education, and students.
Each student club subsequently signs its own specific baptism charter within their institution, containing agreements on the conduct of student initiations, with particular attention to safety, inclusion, and mutual respect.
In addition to the charter signing, student clubs also receive training and guidance on themes such as cross-border behavior, first aid, organizing safe events, open reflection on alcohol consumption, and inclusive communication. This positions club leaders not only as guides for initiations but also as ambassadors of a positive student culture.
The signing also marks the kickoff of a new academic year full of activities for students, including the Student Welcome on Thursday, October 1st. Kortrijk is thus fully prepared for a vibrant and safe academic year.
Through the baptism charter, all partners clearly agree that respect, safety, and friendliness must always come first. Students clubs will also be introduced to initiatives like Ask Angela and Over je Grens, and will attend training sessions on topics including alcohol use and bystander intervention. This ensures that traditions can continue while always respecting everyone's boundaries.
