The local authority of Houthulst is distributing free native saplings to residents to support nature and climate. A maximum of five saplings can be ordered per address.

The free trees can be collected on Saturday, December 19, between 9 AM and 12 PM at the Muziekdoos on the Vrijetijdscampus. The young saplings are approximately 65 cm long with a diameter of half a centimeter to facilitate transport.
For planting, it is recommended to dig a spacious hole, loosen the soil, and enrich it with compost. The sapling should be planted slightly deeper than its final depth, and the soil firmly pressed. One or more stakes should be placed, preferably to the southwest, to support the tree against the wind. Finally, a watering rim is made, and the tree is watered generously.
An overview of the available tree species, including rowan, common oak, small-leaved lime, cherry, beech, ash, hazel, sweet chestnut, hornbeam, silver birch, and common alder, is available at the bottom of the page.
