The Wijkcentrum Mare is now fully operational again after a phased reopening. The service was gradually developed with a focus on quality and safety for visitors, volunteers, and staff, enabling the expansion of the meal service. Visitors find not only a warm meal but also companionship and support, strengthening the fight against loneliness. This success is partly due to the dedication of committed volunteers and employees.
Giovanny Saelens, alderman for Social Affairs, emphasizes the importance of these centers. The annual report of Wijkgericht Sociaal Werk shows that in 2025, 26,465 warm meals were served in Kortrijk's community centers. In the first half of 2026 alone, 655 meals were provided to 33 unique visitors in Marke.
This expansion aligns with the vision of Wijkgericht Sociaal Werk, which focuses on strong neighborhoods and accessible local support services. For many visitors, the meal is a regular weekly appointment, an incentive to go out and meet others. After the meal, there is time for conversation over coffee or a game, fostering new contacts and mutual support.
In 2025, the Marke community center recorded 10,716 visits from 816 unique visitors, with 41 activities and 364 participants, despite a three-month closure. The center relies on 44 active volunteers who support the meal service, bar operations, and various activities like Koffieklets and Zoete Vrijdag.
Reservations for a meal can be made at the reception or by phone at 056/24.08.20, no later than 9:30 AM.
