Europe is significantly increasing its investment in security and defense in the coming years. This presents opportunities for Flemish companies and knowledge institutions active in areas such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, drones, sensor technology, and cybersecurity.
During DIF-Day, representatives from Defense explained the technological needs of today and the future. Ukrainian speakers also shared their experiences with the deployment and development of new technologies in an operational context. The European defense market and opportunities for Flemish companies were also discussed, with representatives from the European Commission and the European Defence Agency providing insights into European funding, cooperation programs, and connections with larger defense companies.
DIF-Day is part of the Flemish Innovation and Industrial Strategy for Security and Defense (VISD). Flanders is allocating an additional 135 million euros this legislative period to support innovation in security and defense, aiming to translate technological expertise into concrete applications more quickly. The event was organized by the Department of Work, Economy, Science, Innovation and Social Economy (WEWIS).
De Blauwe Cluster, responsible for the maritime component within VISD, co-organized a breakout session on maritime security and innovation with the Belgian Navy, the Maritime Services Agency Coast, Elia, and Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
