The Spelotheek Leuven has implemented a new digital lending system, simplifying the borrowing of materials for children and adults with special needs, their caregivers, and professionals.

Since September, users of the Spelotheek Leuven, a collaboration between Bib Leuven and Huis van het Kind Leuven, can search the collection online, track their loans digitally, and renew materials. This digital system enhances accessibility for visitors borrowing materials and those seeking tailored advice.
The extensive collection includes adapted toys, board games, puzzles, sensory materials, motor development tools, and educational games for various ages and care needs. The transition from a paper-based card system to a digital one marks the culmination of years of preparatory work.

"The digitalization makes the operation of the toy library even more accessible for the visitor. Those who borrow materials can now track and renew their loans from home. Visitors receive automatic reminders to return borrowed materials on time. At the same time, it becomes much easier to search the collection from home via the digital catalog."

The digitalization was only possible thanks to the dedication of the volunteer team. "For many years, they have been the heart of the toy library. They ensure a warm welcome, provide advice, and manage operations smoothly. They also made a huge contribution to the digitalization by registering, checking, and processing thousands of materials," stated Lothe Ramakers, alderman for equal opportunities and chair of Huis van het Kind Leuven. She explicitly thanked them for their commitment and valuable work in making the toy library more accessible for children and adults with extra care needs, and their loved ones.
