The college of mayor and aldermen of Affligem has issued unfavorable advice for the construction of two wind turbines near the E40, as the project would exceed the spatial carrying capacity.

The municipality of Affligem has issued a negative recommendation regarding the proposed wind turbine project, which involves the construction of two 200-meter-high wind turbines near the E40. The college of mayor and aldermen has concluded that the project is not in line with current legal provisions and good spatial planning.
Although the municipality does not have permitting authority, the college has proposed additional conditions should the permit be granted. These include strict replanting of vegetation, a report on the modulation of wind turbine types to comply with noise standards, a central reporting point for shadow flicker complaints, and the possibility for residents and businesses to participate in renewable energy projects.
Previously, a public inquiry was held regarding the application, running from February 9 to March 9, 2024. The original plans by Engie and Eoly to build the turbines near Kortenbos, Buikouterbaan, and Zwarteberg were met with opposition from the municipality. The Municipal Spatial Structure Plan from 2011 only supports wind turbines on the Bellekoutersite within a cooperative framework.
The municipality will engage legal counsel to formulate a well-substantiated negative opinion, as they do not agree with the placement of wind turbines at the proposed locations under any circumstances.
