In observance of the World Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17th, Affligem, recognized as a foster care municipality, is drawing attention to the daily challenges faced by individuals experiencing poverty.

Under the slogan ‘A life in poverty is full of hurdles,’ Pleegzorg Vlaanderen is focusing this year on the impact poverty has on the daily lives of thousands of children, young people, and families. Poverty is defined as more than just a lack of financial resources; problems in one life domain often affect other aspects such as education, health, well-being, housing, and social contacts. This accumulation of obstacles is referred to as child poverty.
For children and young people, this inequality often begins at a young age, leading to unequal opportunities for development, play, and talent discovery. The consequences can manifest as stress, shame, and low self-esteem, with their strengths and resilience sometimes overshadowed by prejudice. Affligem aims to continue highlighting this issue, emphasizing every child's right to develop fully, where child poverty remains a significant barrier. The municipality remains committed to fostering understanding, equal opportunities, and inclusion.
The municipality translates this commitment into concrete actions. In the run-up to the World Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the first food distribution by the Voedselkring took place at the Bellewinkel. This collaboration aims to provide sustainable food aid for financially vulnerable residents. Additionally, employees of the Sociaal Huis van Affligem organized a soup sale for colleagues, with proceeds supporting initiatives for individuals in vulnerable situations.
Both the launch of the Voedselkring and the soup action aim to draw attention to the daily hurdles faced by people in poverty. Simultaneously, these initiatives seek to demonstrate that solidarity begins with small, concrete gestures, contributing to a caring community where no one is left behind.
