From October 10th to 18th, it is the Week of the Dutch Language. In Maldegem, three initiatives are being spotlighted to help non-native speakers practice Dutch and bring people together. Language plays a crucial role in daily life, and the municipality has long focused on accessible opportunities for practice.
The Conversation Tables take place every Tuesday from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at LDC Oud St. Jozef. Participants practice Dutch spontaneously through games, cooking, or crafts. Everyone is welcome regardless of language level, and children can accompany their parents. A digital walk was also organized during the Digital Week to combine Dutch practice with digital skills.
The buddy program offers non-native speakers a chance to practice Dutch in everyday life. Volunteers regularly meet with residents to engage in activities and conversations. New buddy pairs will start in January. Sign-ups are accepted via integratie@maldegem.be.
At Maldegem Library, non-native speakers can visit the Dutch Language Point (Taalpunt Nederlands). Here, free practice materials are available, including reading books, dictionaries, and language courses. With a free library membership, visitors can borrow materials to continue practicing at home, providing an accessible space for new residents.
Through these initiatives, Maldegem invests in a community where everyone has the opportunity to participate in social life and feel at home. The Dutch Language Week emphasizes the importance of language as a connecting element.
