Herzele has been named 'Winkelhiergemeente' 2026 (Shop Local Municipality 2026) by Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen, recognized for its innovative Heuro digital currency and Terras Kompas guide.

The municipality of Herzele has been awarded the title of 'Winkelhiergemeente' 2026 by Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen. The jury was impressed by the combination of the Heuro, a digital currency for local shopping, and the Terras Kompas, a summer guide linking hospitality and tourism with local spending. These initiatives complement each other, connecting local commerce with hospitality, tourism, recreation, and experiences.
The Heuro allows residents to pay at over 80 affiliated local businesses, with a physical alternative available for non-digital payments. The local government also uses the currency for municipal events and as a gift. The Terras Kompas builds on this by connecting hospitality, terraces, and summer bars with walking routes and practical information, including where the Heuro can be used. This synergy, linking local spending with the discovery of Herzele, was decisive for the jury.

"Local authorities play a key role in developing vibrant and future-oriented town centers. With 'Winkelhiergemeente', we highlight strong and inspiring examples. Herzele, through the Heuro and Terras Kompas, demonstrates how local purchasing can connect trade, hospitality, tourism, and experiences."

In addition to the title and trophy, crafted by students from Richtpunt Campus Eeklo, Herzele will receive a sponsored report in UNIZO Magazine. The municipality will also receive guidance from the Retail Design Lab at UHasselt, led by professor Katelijn Quartier. A retail experience audit will map the quality and DNA of the shopping area, providing practical advice on experience, spatial quality, design, and atmosphere.
The other laureates, Dendermonde and Lochristi, also receive support. A promotional film has been made for each of the three municipalities to showcase their local approach. Furthermore, Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen is providing them with a 'quick scan local economy'. This scan identifies priorities, challenges, and opportunities for local economic policy, offering concrete recommendations.
The 'Winkelhiergemeente' election is a biennial initiative by Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen to highlight local authorities committed to strong, core-reinforcing local economic and retail policies.
