The municipal council approved the appointment of Sen Verdievel on October 6. Verdievel is eager to start in Geraardsbergen. "I can continue to work here with passion for local governance in a challenging context."
Verdievel describes himself as a 'people person' who enjoys collaboration and accessibility. "Decisions are not made from an ivory tower, but in cooperation with employees and the board."
After 15 years with the local administration of Dilbeek, where he grew up, he sees the move to Geraardsbergen as a logical next step. He notes the city, with its urban core and surrounding rural areas, offers a challenging context for serving citizens effectively.
He emphasizes the importance of acting decisively and efficiently with resources and making choices. Verdievel plans to spend the first six months familiarizing himself with the organization before developing a plan, always in collaboration with staff.
As General Director, he sees his role as a connecting factor between the board and the administration, aiming to foster a 'story of togetherness'.
To employees, he says: "Be proud of what you do, of the impact you have." To citizens: "The people working here are doing their utmost and genuinely trying to make Geraardsbergen better."
Mayor Fernand Van Trimpont stated that with Sen Verdievel, the local administration is choosing an experienced and unifying leader who will further strengthen the organization and guide it through the societal challenges and opportunities ahead.
Sen Verdievel previously served as Head of Environment, Sector Coordinator for Living & Entrepreneurship, Director of Civic Affairs and Living & Entrepreneurship, and for the past four years as Director of Leisure in the municipality of Dilbeek. From January 2027, he will join Lokaal Bestuur Geraardsbergen.
