The city of Geraardsbergen has introduced a new, future-oriented animal welfare plan for 2026-2031, aiming for a animal-friendly and harmonious living environment for both people and animals.

With initiatives such as an Animal Desk, an Animal Welfare Council, and new projects focusing on nature, recreation, and the local economy, Geraardsbergen aims to build an animal-friendly living environment in the coming years. The new policy plan, building on foundations laid in 2023, is structured around four pillars: 'Heart for Animals', 'Humans and Animals in Harmony', 'Wild about Geraardsbergen', and 'Geraardsbergen: A City to Experience for Humans and Animals'. This approach integrates animal welfare, biodiversity, nuisance prevention, and animal-friendly recreation.
Alderman for Animal Welfare Stephan De Prez emphasizes the broad and positive approach. "Animal welfare today encompasses much more than just pets. It touches upon nature, climate, safety and public health, well-being, tourism, and the living environment. We want to be a city where people and animals live together respectfully, and where animal welfare is integrated into all relevant policy areas."
A significant innovation is the establishment of an Animal Welfare Council, where associations, volunteers, experts, and involved residents can contribute to the policy's implementation. The existing Information Point for Animals will evolve into a full-fledged Animal Desk, serving as a central point of contact for all animal welfare inquiries.
The plan also emphasizes prevention and collaboration. The successful stray cat policy, where organizations like Katsoiets and House of Cats have sterilized and cared for over 550 cats with support from the local government, will continue. To promote responsible pet ownership, the local government will maintain subsidies for microchipping and sterilizing or neutering domestic cats, with a simplified digital application process.
Under the banner 'Wild about Geraardsbergen', the city aims to involve residents more in the nature of their surroundings through education and nature-inclusive building. The plan also addresses biodiversity and nature experience, intending to prevent problems, foster dialogue, and strengthen support for nature and biodiversity.
For dog lovers, the plan introduces a 'Dog-Friendly Label' for hospitality businesses and accommodations that pay extra attention to dogs. Additionally, a 'Kwispelkompas' (Wagging Tail Compass) will be launched, a practical guide for residents and visitors to navigate dog off-leash areas, facilities, and dog-friendly locations in Geraardsbergen.
