The City of Ghent takes a significant step towards modernizing its police force by seeking a design team for the renovation of the General Police Center in the Ekkergemwijk district.

To optimize service delivery and collaboration, the Ghent police aims to improve its housing and centralize various departments. However, the current buildings are outdated, unsustainable, and not adapted to modern policing operations, necessitating a thorough renovation of the police site.
Consultancy firms FVWW Architecten and Palmbout Urban Landscapes have previously completed a feasibility study and development plan. This plan includes a new, larger wing, underground parking, extensive renovation of the protected 'Klooster van Deynze' and the old military hospital, a central access square, and new green zones.
Sogent is coordinating the entire project and is now looking for a multidisciplinary team to shape the design. The open call was published on Friday, October 2, via the website of the Flemish Government Architect. According to current planning, construction works can commence at the earliest in 2030 and are expected to last about six years.
Mathias De Clercq, Mayor of Ghent, emphasized that the groundwork is done and it's now up to a design team to bring it to fruition. Joris Vandenbroucke, Alderman for Urban Development and chairman of Sogent, added that Sogent has extensive experience with complex urban development projects that combine heritage, contemporary architecture, and new public functions. In Ekkergem, this expertise will be used to create a future-proof location for the Ghent police and the city.
