The area with bollards in front of the De Wijze Eik primary school in Mariakerke will be replaced by a green walking and cycling zone. A wider pedestrian crossing and a bicycle parking area will be added. This autumn, the City will also create parking spaces using new grass pavers in the Eeklostraat.
Currently, a traffic filter with bollards prevents car traffic at the school gate of De Wijze Eik. This zone will soon be greened, offering more space and a more pleasant environment for children and parents arriving on foot or by bike.
New traffic platforms will slow down traffic. The pedestrian crossing will be relocated to a better spot and widened, improving the connection for pedestrians to the route towards Wolvengracht. A spacious bicycle parking area will accommodate bicycles for students and parents. The redevelopment is scheduled to start in the summer of 2027.
The cluster of bollards at the school will be replaced by a zone with greenery, a wider pedestrian crossing, and bicycle parking. Simultaneously, 25 parking spaces will be created, resulting in a more pleasant and safer school environment accessible to everyone.
In anticipation of the larger redevelopment, 25 parallel parking spaces in grass pavers will be installed in the Eeklostraat this October. Currently, cars park on the verges, causing damage. The grass pavers will fill potholes and protect the verge and tree roots, compensating for parking spaces previously removed from the school area.
