The heritage sector in Flanders is hit hard by the Flemish government's austerity measures. Institutions like Amsab-ISG and Liberas are losing 50% of their operational funding, Huis van Alijn and Kina 30%. The Boekentoren, along with two other nationally recognized heritage libraries, faces a 100% loss. Four Ghent heritage service providers – Archiefpunt, ETWIE, TOON, and Erfgoedcel Gent – also face significant reductions, with consequences that are difficult to foresee.
The symbolic auction will take place on Thursday, October 15, 2026, from 6 PM to 7 PM at the Boekentoren, Rozier 9, Ghent. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. The event aims to highlight the societal value of heritage as a foundation for culture and democracy.
Archives, museums, and heritage libraries are considered more than just repositories; they are the raw material for research, education, journalism, and artistic creation. They preserve the diverse voices and experiences that have shaped society, providing historical evidence to critically examine societal developments and challenge prevailing narratives, thereby fueling democratic debate.
During the auction, guided by auctioneer Luk De Bruyker, participants will bid with fictional money and ideas for meaningful heritage use. The organizers question the price society pays when heritage care is cut and urge people to come to the Boekentoren on October 15 to send a strong signal.
