In recent years, meemoo and its partners have digitized over 300 art and heritage objects in 3D. To make these digital models publicly accessible, the EUreka3D-XR project investigated how techniques like extended reality (XR) can bring 3D heritage to life. This European collaborative project brought together 12 partners from across Europe to develop new ways of experiencing heritage.
New technologies enable close examination of heritage, placing objects in virtual environments, or offering visitors a multi-sensory experience. The project focused on five tools for AR walks, talking avatars, and converting 2D images into 3D models. These tools were tested in three pilot scenarios, including the visualization of the medieval city walls of Girona. This yielded not only technical insights but also practical applications.
Projects like EUreka3D-XR foster international knowledge sharing. New insights and innovative practices reach Flanders faster, while Flemish expertise is shared at the European level. Meemoo was responsible for knowledge dissemination within EUreka3D-XR through events. The tools, manuals, and knowledge remain available via platforms like Europeana, allowing the project's results to live on in other initiatives and online courses.
The collaboration does not end with EUreka3D-XR. Flemish expertise continues to be shared internationally through conferences and projects. Since early 2026, meemoo has been involved in the ECHOLOT project, which aims to simplify the sharing of images and metadata for heritage organizations on platforms like Wikimedia and Europeana. Together with institutions such as the KMSKA, M Leuven, MSK GENT, Musea Brugge, Mu.ZEE, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, and De Munt, simplified processes are being tested.
The EUreka3D-XR project was made possible by the Digital Europe Programme of the European Union.
