From January 1, 2027, owners of rental properties built before 1945 must obtain a compliance certificate for each new tenant.

Landlords of properties built before 1945 will require a compliance certificate from January 1, 2027, when a new tenant moves in. Owners falling under this regulation will receive an official letter. This certificate confirms that the property meets minimum quality and safety standards, including its general condition, roof insulation, and double glazing. Through this measure, the municipalities within the operational area of Wonen Leie & Schelde aim to improve the living quality for tenants.
To obtain a compliance certificate, a property inspection must be requested. An inspector will assess the property using a technical checklist. If serious defects are identified, they must be resolved before the property can be rented out again.
Wonen Leie & Schelde is organizing information sessions for owner-landlords to inform them about this new obligation. The sessions will take place from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on the following dates: Monday, November 3, 2026, at DC Heusden (Heusdendorp 2, Destelbergen), Thursday, November 26, 2026, at zaal Scaldis (Sportdreef 1b, Gavere), and an online session on Thursday, January 7, 2027. Registration is possible via www.wonenleieschelde.be or info@wonenleieschelde.be.
