The KMI (Royal Meteorological Institute) warns of powerful gusts on Friday afternoon, October 23rd in East Flanders. Emergency services are on standby, but citizens can also help by preparing well for the approaching storm.

Storm Austen will reach our country on Friday afternoon and evening. The southerly wind will increase and gradually shift to the southwest and then west. In the western part of the country, including parts of East Flanders, gusts of 90 km/h or more may occur. At the coast, winds of over 100 km/h are expected. Elsewhere in the province, wind gusts of 80 or 90 km/h are possible.
The KMI advises thorough preparation. Close windows and doors and raise roller shutters. Bring loose objects indoors and keep pets inside. Avoid parks, forests, nature reserves, and areas with many trees. Adjust your driving behavior, avoid non-essential travel, and use common sense.
For storm damage, contact the fire department via the e-loket at www.hvzwaasland.be/e-loket-stormschade or call 1722. In case of life-threatening danger, always call 112.
