Thresholds and small steps often pose an obstacle for people with mobility impairments. With the new initiative Evergem Threshold-Free, the municipality is addressing this issue. In collaboration with Dito vzw, an organization dedicated to an inclusive society, local retailers are supported in removing thresholds within their establishments.
Shops and hospitality businesses can apply for a subsidy of up to 300 euros to make their premises threshold-free. The first mobile ramp was officially inaugurated on Thursday, September 25, 2026, at the traiteur shop Luncherie in Ertvelde.
Each year, the municipality aims to guide 25 to 30 retailers in making their businesses accessible. Besides ramps, other aids may also be considered, such as sliding doors which are easier for wheelchair users to open than standard doors.
